Bharatiya Janata Party General Secretary Pramod Mahajan was shot at today by his youngest brother Pravin Mahajan at his Worli residence in central Mumbai. 56-year-old Mahajan was severely wounded when his brother pumped four bullets into his stomach at around 8.00 AM today. There were no bullets in the chest.

Mahajan was rushed to the Hinduja hospital by a doctor living in the apartment complex. Mahajan went through a long surgery after which his condition was pronounced critical but stable. According to party members, one of the bullets has been removed and the other two are being removed.

As many as four bullets have 'shattered' Mahajan's liver, pancreas, intestines and the IVC, a key pipeline of blood leading to heart, according to Dr S Bhattacharya. "Mahajan has lost a fair amount of blood and has been given as many as 25 bottles of blood," the doctor said.

After the surgery, Mahajan was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit. Doctors have stated that the next 48 hours would be critical for Mahajan.

It is not very clear as to why Pravin shot Mahajan. There were speculations that a property dispute was a cause of the unfortunate incident. After shooting his brother, Pravin went to the police station and surrendered.

Pravin is known to be a reclusive member of the family. Pravin's lawyer, Nand Kumar Rajurkar is reported to have said that his client has a mental condition.

Meanwhile, Ex-BJP chief L K Advani cut short his Bharat Suraksha Yatra and rushed to Mumbai to enquire about Mahajan's health.

BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and Party president Rajnath Singh are also expected to reach Mumbai shortly.

BJP Vice President Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi has said that party units across the country have been asked to organise prayer meetings for Mahajan's speedy recovery. BJP activists have also landed up at the hospital to donate blood.
