Gangster Ejaz Pathan’s nephew Abdul Wahab is among the three who have been nabbed in connection with the October 16 Kala Ghoda shootouts. The other two have been identified as Karim and Praveen alias Samad.

It may be recalled that the Kala Ghoda crime happened in the afternoon of October 16, just outside the City Civil and Sessions Court. Two under-trials in a drug related case out on bail – Amjad Khan (40) and Himanshu Chaudhury (25) – faced a volley of bullets and succumbed on the spot.

Himanshu and Amjad, who were arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) under the Narcotic Drug and Psychotropic Substances Act in 2000 for possession of 516 kg of Mandrax, were shot down allegedly by the three now in custody. The shootout happened after Amjad and Himanshu were on bail attending the trial as and when required. While Amjad was hit by nine bullets, three pierced Himashu.

The episode had heralded the resurgence of inter-gang wars in Mumbai. The police immediately geared up to face the new threat. The arrests made today may be seen as a breakthrough in the Kala Ghoda shoot out case.

Mumbai city has been a playing field for many a gang and shoot outs were regular till a few years ago. However, a lull in this area made the police believe that such crimes are history and gang wars long gone. The Kala Ghoda shootouts pointed to many more in the offing. The home department has a tough task at hand, with rival gangs waiting for an opportunity to eliminate each other.
