March 21: Want a lesson in how to bounce back from a
devastating tsunami? Look to Thailand. Hoteliers in the town
of Thai town of Phuket are hoping that the global beauty
contest will help build tourist interest and revive the
economy of the battered areas.
From 17-23 March, the 44 contestants of Miss Universe
Thailand will stay at the Kata Beach Resort hotel, one of the
sponsors of the competition. According to the president
of the Kata Group of hotels, the contestants' presence
will add colour to the island province. This will help build
tourist interest, he added.
In the December tsunami, Phuket, in fact, suffered less
damage compared to many other unfortunate areas in Thailand.
The island has been almost restored to its original condition,
though some more work is required at the beachfront
constructions.
Besides Thailand, many other tsunami-hit Asian nations like
Sri Lanka, have also pinned hopes on tourism to rebuild their
destroyed economies.
