With eight people arrested so far found to be SIMI activists, the Maharashtra police have said that they have cracked the Malegaon blasts case, in which as many as 31 people were killed and over 100 injured.
While the eight people arrested are in custody, eight others are still absconding. According to the police, the motive behind the blasts was inciting communal riots.
It may be recalled that four blasts had occurred on the fateful day in Malegaon. Two of the bombs were placed outside a local mosque in the Bada Kabrastan area where residents had gathered for prayers. The police added that the main accused is a local factory owner Shabbir Batterywala.
Batterywala, who is already in police custody has been questioned and it has been found that his involvement in the blasts in Malegaon are clear to be established beyond doubt.
Batterywala is believed to have visited Pakistan in 2003 for arms training. He and anther employee of his, Noor ul Huda, planned the entire conspiracy which was effected on May 8, 2006. Aiming at triggering riots in the communally-sensitive Malegaon town, the accused had allegedly assembled all the bombs in his factory before deploying them for explosion.
The police have information that two others, Mohammed Ali and Asif Elias Junaid, had brought the RDX used for the blasts from Mumbai to Malegaon.
The eight people absconding are suspected to be Pakistan nationals who had helped to make the bombs used in the Malegaon blasts. The police report that they have cracked the case comes based on these findings. The challenge before the cops now is to establish their investigation findings in court.
