Pramod Mahajan is still fighting for his life. His condition has not changed in the past 45 hours and continues to be critical.
Mahajan is now on 24-hour dialysis and life-support systems. There was a very gradual reduction in medicines to maintain his blood pressure. "The condition is still critical but stable and very gradually the requirement of drugs for blood pressure support is coming down. The recovery seems to be very slow but the direction is positive," said Anupam Verma, Director, Administration, Hinduja Hospital. Three bullets continue to be lodged in his body and doctors have said there would be no surgical intervention until his condition stabilises.
In the meantime, the police are grappling with the motive. The day Praveen shot Mahajan, Praveen had gone to Mahajan's home from Thane. The police are questioning Praveen to find out why it took him one-and-half hours to reach Worli, which is only 22 kms away. Praveen claims that he was brooding on the treatment meted out to him by Pramod and hence was driving slowly. The police feel he may have met up with some other peole during that time, details of which could help the investigation.
Officials are trying to find out if Praveen had decided to to kill Pramod in case his last attempt at reconciliation failed. However, when questioned, Praveen maintained that the attack was not pre-planned. The police are analysing cellphone records of Praveen to determine whether he spoke to anyone when he was driving from Thane to Worli.
The police have yet to record the statement of Pramod Mahajan's wife, Rekha, who was present in the house at the time of the incident.
