Indian Idol 3 is now in the final stages. The contestants are down to the top two - Amit Paul and Prashant Tamang. Between them, Amit Paul and Prashant Tamang have huge support from their fans from Nepal, West Bengal, and the whole of the North-East. Who is going to be the Indian Idol 3 - the very talented Amit Paul or the affable, sweet-natured cop Prashant Tamang? Here is a profile of the final 2.

Amit Paul

Amit Paul is clearly the favorite of Indian Idol 2. Amit is considered the better singer and touted to win hands on. The judges have always praised him and maintained that he is their Indian Idol. Amit Paul, who hails from Shillong, can sing in Hindi, English, Bengali, and Khasi. Earlier in the show, Amit Paul had been voted out but he came back through a wild card entry.

Meanwhile, his support in the North-east is very high. Last week, when Amit Paul had gone to Shillong, the crowds went crazy. Crowds followed him all the way from Guwahati airport to Bada Pani lake where a Khasi tribal dance was performed in his honor. On September 5, 2007 the Chief Minister bestowed thet title of brand ambassador of peace on Amit Paul.

Prashant Tamang

Prashant Tamang is pretty much the dark horse of the Indian Idol 3 contest. The twenty-four year Prashant is a policeman with the Kolkata police force. Prashant Tamang is Nepalese hailing from Darjeeling. The sweet-natured cop is the first Nepal ever to take part in the Indian Idol contest. Prashant has had no professional formal training in singing.

The Indian Idol judges have often criticized him saying that his lack of training shows when he attempts difficult numbers. In the last few episodes, Prashant Tamang has shown a remarkable improvement in the quality of his singing.

Overall, Prashant is not considered to be as good as Amit Paul, but he has great support from his fan base. His fans are spread across Nepal, Sikkim, and West Bengal. Such is the support extended to Prashant Tamang, that he has never ever been in the danger zone so far in the contest.

As the final draws near, the North-East is gripped by the Indian Idol excitement. All the newspapers are carrying stories about Prashant Tamang and Amit Paul. Rallies have been organized for Prashant urging people to vote. The police are also campaigning heavily for Prashant. Reportedly, Nepalese people from all over the world are sending in money for SMSes.
