Suicides spur IAF to counseling
Suicides and fratricidal killings
increase; Air Force looks for
solutions.

The Indian Air Force is fighting an unprecedented war, of late. The number of suicides and fratricidal
killings within the force has seen it being grounded for want of a solution to tackle this psychological
menace.
Now, the IAF seems to have found an answer to combat the problem. The IAF has kicked off a new drive to
provide its staff psychological counseling so that they can adapt to severe working conditions.
According to senior officials, many of the IAF staff members and Army men have committed suicide and
the rate of fratricidal killings has also gone up. Most of them allege that severe training and postings in
unfriendly areas are the root causes of such actions. However, probe conducted by the force has found that
actual problem is the psyche that refuses to adapt.
The Indian Air Force plans to conduct workshops, seminars and programmes in a bid to help officers and
airmen attain coping skills and help them psychologically in their work and societal roles.
It has been observed that IAF officers and other employees get married to career-oriented women. Problems
crop up between them very soon as the IAF men find it tough to recognise the professional demands of their
wives.
The new initiative has been seen wih a lot of
enthusiasm, and every one agrees that it will take time, but
initiation has taken place. Now it is left to the IAF personnel to
identify changes and react, imbibe and be
receptive.
