Delhi likely to be leading fashion hub

Delhi, the capital of India, may become the country’s leading fashion centre.

24 March, 2007

This follows the Central Government’s proposal to set up a fashion hub in Dwarka.

The announcement, made by Minister of State for Urban Development Ajay Maken at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW), has been hailed by Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) director-general Rathi Vinay Jha as “a most welcome development.”

Reputed fashion designers too have cheered the government’s move. “It’s definitely a step forward. Finally, we are beginning to see some hope,” said designer Payal Jain. According to Leena Singh of Ashima-Leena, “it’s a wonderful idea. All of us will be under one roof and this will create enormous synergy between the various components of the fashion industry.”

The proposal for a fashion hub at Dwarka in west Delhi has been on the anvil for some time now and it received a boost after the Supreme Court ordered in 2006 the demolition of commercial establishments which were being run illegally in residential areas.

Following the demolitions, a good number of designers, many of them top-notch ones, were evicted from the fashionable addresses they had occupied for several years.
