SOCIETY - CHARLES-CAMILLA WEDDING DAY

Charles weds Camilla - at last!

BY A CORRESPONDENT

April 8:  The most romantic wedding of this century and last was blessed on Saturday at the Windsor chapel in London, where Prince Charles wed his life-long love Camilla Parker Bowles. The wedding, the second for the bride and the groom, was a simple civil ceremony at a government office, followed by the traditional Anglican blessing, performed by the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams.

The bride and groom emerged from the Guildhall chapel arm-in-arm to the cheers of onlookers and a jazz band playing, "Congratulations." They waved to the boisterous crowd, but there was no public kiss or embrace. A band of Diana supporters had assembled to boo the couple, who took no notice of them.

The British Queen Elizabeth and husband Prince Phillip did not turn up for the civil ceremony. Initially, the Queen's reluctance to attend the civil ceremony was perceived as snub to the couple. But Buckingham Palace later clarified that there as no snub involved at all. In fact, the iconic Rolls Royce Phantom later used to drive around the royal couple was the transport earlier used by the Queen herself.

However, the entire royal family attended the short blessing ceremony, which was held in regal elegance.

"They should have been married a long time ago," said an American tourist who was among the crowds outside the Windsor Castle, where the blessing ceremony was conducted. One hopes the Prince and his bride breathed a sigh of relief at the error-free way in which the ceremony was performed.

Camilla Parker Bowles now takes the title of Princess of Wales. But she has said that she would like to be known as the Duchess of Cornwall, a slightly "junior" title.

The romance of Prince Charles and Camilla predates the Prince's royal wedding to Lady Diana Spencer in 1981, a marriage which tragically failed. The Prince met Camilla in the seventies, when both of them were students. Since the Prince never took the initiative in her relationship with Camilla, she believed that the Prince will never propose to her and later got married to Tom Parker Bowles. Her marriage too cracked up after a while.

Charles and Diana got divorced in 1996. Since then, his name has been tagged with Camilla's off and on. Diana got involved in a slew of extramarital relationships, which ended with her tragic accident when she was fleeing paparazzi with her latest boyfriend Dodi Fayed.

Camilla became closer to the Prince in the days after Diana's death. Recently, she had moved in with the Prince at his official residence Clarence House.
