AAMIR KHAN ON REHABILITATION AND NARMADA BACHAO ANDOLAN

Aamir's show of solidarity to the NBA dammed

Aamir Khan's open show of support to the Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) has earned him more brickbats than roses. The actor seems to be willing to put his money where his mouth is, though.

Aamir Khan's support to the NBA (Narmada Bachao Andolan) has sparked off a major controversy across the country. Recently, the superstar along with fellow actors Atul Kulkarni, Kunal Kapoor, and director Rakeysh Mehra joined the NBA activists at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. The actor spent over two hours with Narmada Dam project protestors and victims of the Bhopal gas tragedy.

Aamir pledged his support for the Bhopal Gas tragedy survivors and appealed to the Prime Minister to give his attention to the Narmada and the Bhopal Gas issues.

This met with a huge response at the venue. However, things have moved downhill for the actor ever since. He is facing major opposition from individuals across the political spectrum.

BJP workers have stalled the screening of Aamir's latest flick, Rang De Basanti, in Ahmedabad. They also pulled down posters of the film. Party workers shouted slogans and said that they would not allow Aamir's next, Fanaa, to be screened in theatres in the city.

For once Congress Party workers in Gujarat seem to have something in common with BJP workers. The youth wing of the Congress Party called for a boycott for all products endorsed by Aamir. They burnt posters and broke bottles of Coca Cola.

Arundhati Roy also had something to say to the actor. While she welcomed his support, she demanded that Aamir who is the brand ambassador of Coca Cola give up the campaign. “The poster boy of Coke coming here to express his solidarity with the Andolan is meaningless unless he gives up his campaign. If he does it, then he gets zindabad from me and others,” said Roy.

Coca-Cola plants have been accused of causing water shortage and pollution at Plachimada in Kerala and in Pilukhedi in Madhya Pradesh.

Aamir has responded to that by saying, “I’ll take up the issue with Coke. I have been endorsing their brand and if there is a problem, I would like to know and, hopefully, be able to correct (it).”

Aamir has made it very clear that he is not opposed to the construction of the dam. He is reported to have said, “I lived in Kutch for six months during the filming of Lagaan. I know the sort of water problems they have. I really wish everyone who needs water gets the water they deserve."

He said that he respects the decision of the supreme court, but the supreme court also said that the villagers in the affected areas must be rehabilitated. Calling the political parties "lumpen thugs" he demanded that those whose homes will get submerged, or have already been submerged, be resettled with dignity. "These are the political parties who promise to take us ahead, these are the political parties who promise to look after us, these are the political parties who promise to look after our poor and needy. They are using force, they are trying to bully (me)," Khan said.

Meanwhile in Bhopal, Abdul Jabbar, who runs the Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Udyog Sangthan accused the actor of hankering for publicity. “We have suffered for over 20 years. Why has he woken up now? If he is really concerned, let him come to the city, see for himself the suffering of gas survivors and perhaps do something,” Jabbar said.

It is clear though that, in general, most people are sceptical of Aamir's intentions and he will definitely need to back his stand with concrete action. Medha Patkar said she was sorry about the protests that Aamir has had to face but she is clear that he needs to make sacrifices if he wishes to be with the NBA. Aamir, who does not seem to be bothered about the fact that his movies may not be screened at all in some cities, may well have started paying the price for the stance he has taken.
