BY OUR TECH CORRESPONDENT
3 August, 2005: Delphi Corporation has signed an agreement with WorldSpace, Inc., to make mobile satellite radio available in Asia, the firms announced.
The product is expected to be available in the Indian market in the first half of 2006.
Delphi Corporation is a world leader in automotive systems and components, while WorldSpace, Inc., is the only global satellite radio broadcaster spanning India and China.
The companies will launch and market Delphi-WorldSpace Mobile Satellite Audio receivers in India. The firms also plan to expand the product's availability into China.
As per the pact, Delphi would provide hardware that will deliver uninterrupted access to the WorldSpace satellite radio network.
WorldSpace has more than 35 radio stations across India.
WorldSpace’s programmes are a combination of news, sports, music, brand name content and education programming developed by WorldSpace or provided through sources such as BBC and CNN International.
Delphi-WorldSpace Mobile Satellite Radio receivers will be designed to receive and decode the WorldSpace satellite signal throughout India. Later it would be available in other markets where WorldSpace service is available.
The agreement between Delphi and WorldSpace takes the next step forward in expanding the reach of satellite radio into new global markets.
“We expect Delphi-WorldSpace Mobile Satellite Radio to transform the mobile listening experience in India,” said Dominic Seto, managing director, Asia Pacific, Delphi Product & Service Solutions.
“With our product, Indian listeners can expect better sound quality than they are used to with conventional AM/FM equipment, as well as a greater variety of programming. Delphi-WorldSpace Mobile Satellite Audio will deliver clear, digital-quality sound and dramatically expand the array of choices for the Indian market - from five or six FM channels to dozens of news and entertainment options.”
“This move supports Delphi's global strategy to bring consumer electronics products into every region of the world,” said Joseph A. Damato, director, consumer electronics, Delphi Product & Service Solutions.
“We are the market leaders in this arena in North America and this agreement expands our reach in this fast-growing consumer electronics category,” he said.
