Worlds largest airport to come up in Dubai

The world’s largest airport is taking shape in Dubai.

When completed the Dubai World Central International Airport aims to serve 120 million passengers a year. Work is already on and a runway has been completed. Five more runways are slated to be constructed.

The airport is slated to be commissioned by the end of next year.

Already Dubai boasts of the fastest growing airport in Middle East, which handled 28 milion passengers in 2006.

The project is a part of the Dubai World Central (DWC) mega-project, spanning 140 square kilometres. The DWC will have residential and commercial areas and a regional logistics hub.

The promoters are also aiming to make the airport under construction to be the world’s biggest cargo hub, which could handle 12 million tonnes annually.

Infrastructure for the airport project alone may cost $33 billion according to estmates. Around 20,000-30,000 workers are to be employed for the construction.

The present airport is just 40 kilometres away rom the upcoming one. Another terminal is slated to come up in the present airport this year. This could increase the number of passengers to 60 million by 2010.

The DWC will have 850 towers which will employ around 1,30,000 and 2,50,000 are expected to reside there.
Moer than hundred airlines offer flights from Dubai now to about 150 destinations.
