16th August,2005:Qatar Airways will launch flights to Berlin. This is part of the airline’s planned expansion programme in Germany following bilateral talks between Qatar and Germany, which paved the way for an understanding between the two countries in this regard.

As per the agreement, Qatar Airways will increase its flights to 21 by the end of 2006. The airline will start services to two other centres in Germany apart from Berlin. These centres have not yet been identified.

Qatar Airways plans to begin flights to Berlin from December 15 this year.

The airline already operates from Doha to the German cities of Frankfurt and Munich, apart from a freighter service to Munich.

Qatar Airways was eyeing the Berlin segment for a long time now.

The airline plans to operate four flights a week. The aircraft would be a 110 seater Airbus A 319, reports said.

As Qatar Airlines increases its footprint with the addition of Berlin and Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, the number of cities it operates flights to will rise to 68.

Qatar Airways has a fleet of 40 Airbus aircraft. It has plans to triple its number of aircraft in 10 years. The Paris Airshow saw the airline unveiling plans to bag 80 aircraft, estimated to cost around $15 billion.

The airline had also reaped the benefit of a bilateral agreement between Bangaldesh and Qatar, by increasing its number of flights between Doha and Bangladesh capital Dhaka to seven flights a week. It added two flights on Tuesdays and Fridays to increase its capacity in the sector. It operates a a 281-seater Airbus A 330 on this route.

Though Qatar Airways had rights only to operate four flights a week till now, it had been operating a fifth one following a code sharing agreement with Biman of Bangladesh.

It had entered into a code sharing pact with bmi in a bid to increase its presence in Europe, in November last year.
