Lufthansa to add 6 India flights

BY OUR AVIATION CORRESPONDENT

19 July, 2005: New Delhi: Lufthansa has decided to cash in on the boom in Indian aviation sector.

The airline’s south Asia director Werner Heesen said it would operate 38 flights to various Indian destinations by October-end.

Heesen told reporters after the launch of a series of in-flight culinary initiatives

to serve passengers on outbound flights from India here that Lufthansa would operate 38 flights to Indian destinations by October-end. The airline operates 32 flights now. It had just 23 flights two years back.

According to Hessen the Indian market was steadily growing with a steep rise in number of corporate travelers. And this is exactly why Lufthansa is increasingly focusing on the Indian market pie.

The airline has daily flights from Frankfurt to three of India’s metros -- Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai. It also has five flights to Bangalore. From Munich, it operates flights thrice a week to Delhi.

India had signed a new air services agreement with Germany which envisages operating 46 flights a week by carriers of both countries. More than half of air passengers from Indian fly to the US.

Lufthansa, which began operations in Germany in 1926 is one of the world's largest airlines. The group has a network of more than 400 subsidiaries. It operates in six business areas: passenger business, logistics, maintenance, repair and overhaul, catering, leisure travel and international technology services. Lufthansa was first christened Deutsche Luft Hansa Aktiengesellschaft. It was renamed Lufthansa in 1933 following a mega merger of `Deutsche Aero Lloyd’ (DAL) and `Junkers Luftverkehr’. Its crane logo, was designed by ‘Deutsche Luft-Reederei’ in 1919, for DAL using the blue-and-yellow house colors from Junkers.

Lufthansa started operations with a fleet of 162 aircraft. Lufthansa, Air Canada, SAS, Thai Airways und United Airlines started what is called 'Star Alliance,’ the world's first multilateral airline grouping. More airlines joined the elite grouping later.

Lufthansa is headquartered in Cologne. Its main base is Frankfurt International Airport. It is also the group’s primary traffic hub. The company’s second hub is at Munich's Franz Josef Straus International Airport.
