Zinedine Zidane - Player Profile
French soccer superstar Zinedine Zidane wants to have the World Cup football trophy at his disposal when the 2006 tournament ends in Berlin in June 9. Zidane wants to hang his boots after that ultimate prize is in his teams kitty.
That’s a pretty good wish for the immensely talented Zidane, but there are formidable obstacles that stand in way of his dream – Brazil, Argentina, England, hosts Germany and many more of such powerhouses.
Zidane said he wanted to end his illustrious career with the French team with a “big and beautiful success”.
“ I want to become World champion again - that's my goal," the 33-year-old Zidanne told German football magazine Kicker in an interview on Monday.
The French maestro had retired from football after a sloppy show by his country in the European Championships in 2005, but was forced to make a comeback after France’s chances to qualify for the World Cup in Germany looked bleak. A worried Zidane shelved his decision and made a comeback to inspire his team one last time.
Zidane said he would not play after world cup, adding that after the next season he would end his career as a player y retiring even from Club football and there wont be any reconsiderations. Zidane plays for Spanish soccer giants Real Madrid.
"The World Cup is my last big challenge at that level. With Real Madrid I still have another year on my contract to go before 2007," Zidane said.
Zidane who led France to victory over Brazil in 1998 on home soil with two goals, is also a former European and World Player of the year.
France - Team Profile
France had a bad outing at the 2002 football world cup in Japan and Korea, when they were ousted in a tough Group which had Uruguay, Denmark and Senegal. Another setback was that France failed to connect to the goal even once.
But Zidanne himself has a nagging groin problem, which the French hope wont come back to bite him again as France prepares for its last World Cup challenge with him.
This time also France have two tough opponents in South Korea and Switzerland, apart from the unfancied Togo in Group G.
France is ranked eighth in Fifa list. Of the Seven times that France has played Switzerland, France has won thrice and Switzerland twice, with two matches drawn. France has scored nine times while Switzerland has netted 7 times. Against South Korea, France has won both outings, scoring eight goals against it and conceding two.
French coach Raymond Domenech has a tough campaign ahead for Les Blues to reclaim the FIFA trophy established by fellow country man Jules
Rimet.
