OSCAR NOMINATIONS 2008

2008 Oscar nominations are out

24 January, 2007

Daniel Day-Lewis (There Will Be Blood), George Clooney ( Michael Clayton), Johnny Depp (Sweeney Todd) ,Tommy Lee Jones (In The Valley Of Elah) and Viggo Mortensen (Eastern Promises) to vie for Best Actor awards at 80th Annual Academy awards on Feb 24, 2008.

Los Angeles: Juno, a movie which cost just $10 million, is in the race for four Oscar nominations in 2008.

Juno is also a runaway success at the box office collecting more than eight times what it cost – a cool $85 million.

The story of 16 year-old Juno Macguff is all about an issue at the core of an all time raging debate in the U.S. which has divided the American society at all times – the issue of teen pregnancy and abortion.

Canada's Ellen Page, who plays Juno, has been nominated for the best actress Oscar award; the film itself has been nominated in the best picture category.

Jason Reitman who directed the movie also made it to the 2008 Oscar nominees list and so is Diablo Cody a former stripper turned the script writer, taking the nominations tally for Juno to four.

Juno, which earned plaudits in the Toronto Film fete in September last year, also won the Screen Writers Guild Award to Page.

But Juno would well be the lone comic relief this year at the 2008 Oscars, with 'No Country For Old Men' and 'There Will Be Blood' vying for the top honors, along with 'Atonement' and thriller 'Michael Clayton'.

Briton Daniel Day-Lewis, who won the Oscar for the best actor in 1989 for My Left Foot, is in contention again for the Best Actor Oscar in There Will Be Blood, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. The politically sensitive movie is set in early 20th century and is a vivid portrayal of another set of themes which dominate the socio-political landscape of US – oil and religion.

Spain's Javier Bardem spews violence in No Country For Old Men, directed by Coen brothers Joel and Ethan. While the "cool-headed violent character" who unleashes destruction in Texas in 'No Country For Old Men' has won Bardem a nomination for the actor in the best supporting role, the Coen brothers will vie for the Best Director Oscar 2008.

Many renowned critics have already bet their money on 'No Country For Old Men' for the Best Movie Oscar 2008. They say only a split vote with There Will Be Blood could upset their predictions.

In such an event, Micheal Clayton starring George Clooney as a legal fixer could walk away with Oscar honours.

Those seen as less likely winners are Johnny Depp in the musical "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," Tommy Lee Jones in "In the Valley of Elah" and Viggo Mortensen in gangster flick "Eastern Promises." But the Oscars have thrown stunning surprises many times.

Switching back to the women in the tale, we have Cate Blanchett vying for top honours in two categories in 2008 – Best Actress Oscar and in Elizabeth: The Golden Age" for her title role as the British Queen and for the Best Supporting actress Oscar in "I'm Not There."

The other actresses vying for Oscar's are Julie Christie for her role in "Away From Her," French actress Marion Cotillard for "La Vie en rose," Laura Linney for "The Savages" apart from Ellen Page for "Juno." The awards will be given away on February 24.
