Mebatic, an infusion that contains a mixture of flouroquinolone and nitroimidazole to treat gastro intestinal infections will soon be launched in India by Venus Remedies.

Venus Remedies has received sales and manufacturing approvals for Mebatic from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI).

Mebatic has been given marketing approval by DCGI for treating water-bourne infections affecting the digestive tract in humans.

“This product [Mebatic] is intended to be used in infusion form as one of the best solutions for treatment of problems associated with waterborne bacterial/plasmodial pathogens in humans,” Venus Remedies said in an official release.

Mebatic has been approved based on the data of a triple arm phase III comparative clinical trial study against ofloxacin and metronidazole therapies.

Mebatic is a fixed dose combination of flouroquinolone and nitroimidazole. Fluoroquinolones are a group of broad-spectrum antibiotics that show both gram-positive and gram-negative coverage. Fluoroquinolones belong to the family of quinolone antibiotics. Nitroimidazole antibiotics have been used to combat anaerobic bacterial and parasitic infections.

Mebatic is effective in eradicating E coli, Shigella sonnei, N. gonorrohoeae, G vaginalis, Yersinia enterocolitica, and S aureus. The combination has resulted in 20 per cent to 25 per cent more efficacy over the ofloxacin and metronidazole alone therapies.

Venus Remedies now plans to file dossiers of this product in developing countries, as well.

Gastro intestinal infections relating to bacterial and protozoan parasites are well established specially in India and neighbouring countries. Mixed parasitic infection of intestine is most important contributory factor to anaemia. Anaemia due to hookworm disease is most serious problem of chronic suffering and disability in rural population. Giardiasis and ascariasis are important causes of chronic illness, poor absorption of food and impaired growth and development of the children in India. Intestinal amoebiasis leads to lasting disability due to psychic problems.

Gastroenteritis is one of the most prevalent infections in India. A survey in rural population of a hill district in North India revealed the presence of parasitic infection in 66 per cent of the population. Mixed infection was present in 33 per cent.

Mebatic wide spectrum infusion therapy is expected to reduce the hospitalization time and cost to patient.

Gastrointestinal drugs segment contributes to 10.7 per cent of total Indian pharmaceuticals market.

Based in Chandigarh, Venus Remedies India has two manufacturing locations in India and one in Germany.

Venus is a contract manufacturer of oncological and cefelosporine injectable products following EU-GMP norms.
