A testosterone contraceptive injection for men could soon be widely available.
The new testosterone contraceptive injection has been tested in more than 1000 men in a two year experiment. Clinical studies have proved that testosterone contraceptive injection is highly effective.
In the clinical trials conducted in 1,000 Chinese men aged 20 to 45, only around one per cent ended up fathering a child.
Testosterone contraceptive injection was given once in month dosage to the men participated in the study.
The men’s female partners were also participated in the study. The female partners were between 18 and 38 and had no reproductive problems.
“For couples who cannot, or prefer not to use only female-oriented contraception, options are limited,” said Beijing based Dr Yi-Qun Gu, who was also part of the study.
“Our study shows a male hormonal contraceptive may be a potential novel and workable alternative,” Dr Yi-Qun Gu.
Testosterone injections are the most widely practiced and cost effective means of testosterone therapy. Injections are given to persons suffering from low circulating testosterone levels. Testosterone injections are safe and effective, and they produce immediate results. They are also know to enhance metabolic and mental activities in men, and are widely widely resorted to by hypogonadal men. Testosterone injections are to be administrated once in every two to three weeks.
Testosterone injections are intramuscular injections, in which the hormone is injected directly into the muscle so that it is directly absorbed into the blood stream. The quantity of testosterone to be injected depends on the person’s health conditions and testosterone levels in blood. An intramuscular injection of 200 to 300 mg is usually sufficient to make body testosterone levels to normal.
Testosterone is esterified first to inhibit degradation and to make it soluble in oil-based injection vehicles. The common esterified compounds used for injection are testosterone cypionate and testosterone enanthate. This esterified compound is then injected into the body. Testosterone injections are generally given by a healthcare professional in a hospital or clinic setting.
Testosterone injections are available at medicine stores, and often require prescription from doctors. The cost of a testosterone injection is roughly around Rs 500 for a 10 cc vial, which is sufficient for fifteen weeks.
The benefits of testosterone injections include muscle and strength improvement, body hair and skin thickening, improvement in sexual desire, and decreased irritability and depression. Testosterone injections are also recommended for persons having mild/moderate heart diseases as they improve blood flow to the heart during exercise. Testosterone enhances the dilation of coronary arteries, arteries providing blood to heart muscles, thus increasing blood flow and decreasing blood pressure.
Blood testosterone levels shoots up immediately after every testosterone injection. After 4 or 5 days it tends to drop. Disadvantages of testosterone injections include pain in injection field, complexes due to inconvenient scheduling, adverse changes in blood lipids, and itching and irritation.
Low testosterone may result from two different types of abnormality. The first, a failing testicle, is identified by the blood FSH level (too high a level means the testicle is failing) or small, very firm testicles, which may indicate previous infection or damage.
The second condition occurs when the testicle is not receiving appropriate hormonal stimulation from the pituitary gland, which releases the hormones LH and FSH. LH stimulates the testicle to produce testosterone, while FSH stimulates sperm production. In this case, examination of the testicle may demonstrate normal to small testicular size with a softer-than-normal consistency.
