Chicken pox is a common childhood disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). Also known as human herpes virus 3 (HHV-3), varicella-zoster virus is one of the eight herpesviruses known to affect humans. It is characterized by a fever followed by itchy raw pox or open sores.

The air borne disease virus causing chicken pox is a very contagious illness that is caused by the varicella zoster virus.

It begins with skin rashes usually on the body and head and not hands, they become itchy raw pockmarks with small open sores which usually heal without scarring.

Chicken pox is spread easily through direct contact with the secretions from the rash. Many people do not get chicken pox more than once in their lifetime.
