European drug maker Merck KGaA has acquired Indian bio service firm Bangalore Genei (India) Private Ltd.
Merck has bought out the Bangalore Genei from the Sanmar Group through its wholly owned subsidiary in India, Merck Specialities Private Ltd, according to an official release from Merck.
No financial aspect of the Merck-Bangalore Genei deal has been disclosed.
Located in Bangalore, south India, Bangalore Genei specializes in the development, production, marketing and sales of products for proteomic and genomic research. With more than 100 employees, the company generated total revenues of Rs 202m (€ 3.0 million) in fiscal year 2008-09.
Bangalore Genei acquisition will boost Merck KGaA’s existing bioscience business activities making it one of the leading bioscience companies in India, the release said.
“BGIP’s [Bangalore Genei (India) Private Ltd] academic leadership in the Indian academic market, a segment with high growth potential, will ideally complement our existing customer base,” stated Christina Shasserre, Global Head of Merck’s bioscience business.
Bangalore Genei’s product portfolio comprises a wide range of bioscience products, which are tailored to the needs of the domestic market in India, Shasserre said.
Bangalore Genei provides products and services facilitating research and development for life sciences companies, academic and research institutions.
Bangalore Genei’s products and services include design, development, production, testing and marketing of biological research products such as molecular biological reagents, biochemicals, immunochemicals, molecular diagnostic reagents, educational aids, as well as custom research services.
Bangalore Genei has a full-fledged R & D laboratory with state of the art manufacturing facilities. The laboratory is recognised by the Department of Scientific & Industrial Research (DSIR), Government of India. The facilities at Bangalore Genei are also certified to ISO 9002 standards.
Established in 1989, Bangalore Genei claims to be the first to start manufacturing and marketing research biochemicals for biotech research in India. Today the GeNei brand is well recognised by leading research centers and academic institutions in the country.
Bangalore Genei was planning to enter the US and European markets and venturing into biology contract research service for international academic institutes and multinational biopharmaceutical companies.
