Doxercalciferol, a synthetic form of vitamin D, has been launched in India by Dr Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd.
Doxercalciferol, launched under the brand name Redispar is used in the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) due to chronic kidney disease.
Redispar is the first pro-vitamin D2 to be available in India, according to Dr Reddy’s.
Redispar is used to maintain the parathyroid hormone (PTH) and calcium levels in the body in chronic kidney disease patients. Doxercalciferol is safer and more effective in comparison to Calctirol (vitamin D3) and Alfacalcidol (pro vitamin D3), Dr Reddy’s said in a press statement.
Redispar is available in soft gelatin capsule form, and in dosages of 0.5mcg and 2.5mcg.

Doxercalciferol is a pro vitamin D2. It is in an inactive form and gets activated in the liver. The activated form helps maintain the parathyroid hormone and calcium levels in the body.
Doxercalciferol (Redispar) works by promoting the proper absorption and use of calcium and phosphate by the body, as well as normal bone development and maintenance. It also helps regulate parathyroid hormone levels and is involved in magnesium metabolism.
Doxercalciferol synthetic vitamin D capsules cannot be taken if you are taking disulfiram or metronidazole.
Doxercalciferol is also not indicated:
* if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
* if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
* if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
* if you have hardening of the arteries, heart problems, or liver disease
Doxercalciferol interacts with erythromycin or ketoconazole, disulfiram or metronidazole, digoxin, phenobarbital or glutethimide.
