Ranbaxy gets conditional nod to
sell Norvasc generic pills in US
June 25, 2007
The US arm of India’s top drug maker Ranbaxy
Laboratories received tentative approval to sell
low cost versions of anti-hypertension drug
amlodipine in the United States.
Its wholly owned subsidiary Ranbaxy
Pharmaceuticals Inc. announced that the company
has been granted conditional okay by the US Food
and Drug Administration to manufacture and market
amlodipine besylate tablets in 2.5 mg, 5 mg and 10
mg strengths.
Currently sold by the world’s leading drug firm
Pfizer, in the proprietary name Norvasc, sales of
amlodipine besylate tablets touched US $2.79
billion in the year 2007, according to IMS
figures.
Apart from hypertension amlodipine is also
indicated for the symptomatic treatment of chronic
stable angina and may be used alone or in
combination with other antianginal agents. The
product is also indicated for the treatment of
confirmed or suspected vasospastic angina and may
be used as monotherapy or in combination with

This product represented a future opportunity for
