AUTOMOBILES - MARUTI 800

New Maruti 800: Old wine in old bottle

BY A CORRESPONDENT
2/1/2005

Maruti 800 is ready for more. It has a new look from the outside, a spruced up interior and upgrades under the bonnet that enable it to meet superior emission norms across the country.

Managing Director of Maruti Udyog Limited, Jagdish Khattar said: "Just when there was talk about Maruti 800 being phased out, this iconic brand has donned a fresh new look and again surprised everyone. The new look Maruti 800 is Maruti's gift to the millions of 2-wheeler owners in the country who are looking to upgrade to a car."

Director (Marketing and Sales), Maruti Udyog Limited, K Saito said: "Maruti 800 is loved and trusted by the Indian people. Their only complaint was that its looks had not changed for a few years. With this face-lift, we have tried to address that."

The new Maruti 800 will be rolled out across the country over the next 10 days. It comes with clear headlamps with a headlight leveling mechanism and clear lens rear combination lamps. There is a stylish new grille.

The interior of the car has a dual tone upholstery with matching trims.

The Euro III compliant version of the new Maruti 800 also has a 32-bit Electronic Control Unit.

The new Maruti 800 comes in new colours of Crystal Gold, Icy Blue and Carribean Blue. This is in addition to the existing colours : Bright Red, Silky Silver and Superior White.

Mr Khattar said: "Every time a new model or a face lift is launched, there is obviously curiosity about sales targets. As a company, we do not like to make projections for the future. Sales are a function of market demand, but also other factors like production capacity and product mix of each company."

The new Maruti 800 will be priced higher. Details are as follows:
M800 Std Bharat II will cost Rs 2,08,678 (Ex Showroom , Delhi) as against its previous price of Rs 2,05,678. And M800 A/c Bharat II sports a price of Rs 2,31,480, which is up by Rs 3000. The prices of M800 Std Bharat III and M800 A/c Bharat III, however, remain unchanged.
