Usually it was the big names in Indian fashion and occasionally some of the middle rung fashion houses internationally that were associated with Bollywood. Now, the latest Sonam Kapoor starrer, Aisha, makes Bollywood – fashion history by tying up with top fashion houses Salvatore Ferragamo and Christian Dior. Related: Sonam Kapoor’s I Hate Luv Storys

The movie revolves around a fashionista, played by Sonam Kapoor, who is known for her fashionable tastes in real life too. According to sources at Christian Dior, there will be around sixty Dior dresses used in the film – by Sonam and other female artistes. This is the first instance of fashion’s brand integration taking the movies a step away from mass market products and closer to high end fashion.

Aisha, budgeted at 20 crore rupees also features other brands like DLF Emporio, L’Oreal Paris and Portico. But sources say that the Dior association is visibly the strongest. Sonam will be seen throughout the movie with a lady Dior purse. The male lead for the movie is Abhay Deol, and Dior’s presence will be seen on him as well – with the dapper young star clad in Dior suits. According to sources at portico, about ten or twelve new designs will be introduced by Portico to tentatively coincide with the movie’s release.

Sources say that the tie ups with the fashion brands took almost six months to work out before and during the scripting stage. Both Portico and L’Oreal have a number of TV commercials lined up that uses imaging from the film to promote their products.

Aisha, which is co-produced by PVR Pictures and Anil Kapoor Films Co. Pvt. Ltd, and directed by Rajshree Ojha is set for release on August 6. India and especially Bollywood has been the focus of intense global interest, especially in the areas of dance and music. This move by fashion houses could be a statement of the fact that Bollywood has a far wider impact and reach than anticipated before.

Sonam Kapoor fans are likely to have a super 2010. The actress, who debuted in 2007 and has done only two movies since then, has her hands full this year – two films are to be released and shooting is on for three others.

Sonam Kapoor, the daughter of actor Anil Kapoor, debuted in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya opposite Ranbir Kapoor and was then seen in Rakeysh Mehra’s Delhi-6 with Abhishek Bachchan. The 24-year-old is keenly awaiting the release of Aisha and I Hate Luv Storys in 2010.

“Guys, I’ve finished filming Aisha and I Hate Luv Storys and they will be my two releases this year. I’m working on three films this year. I’m doing Thank You, Mausam and the third one I can’t talk about,” Sonam Kapoor posted on her Twitter page recently.

I Hate Luv Storys is a romantic movie slated for a July 2 release. Produced by Karan Johar and directed by his nephew, debutant Punit Malhotra, the film casts Sonam Kapoor opposite Imran Khan (best known for Jane Tu … Ya Jaane Na) and Sammir Dattani. There were media reports recently that Punit Malhotra and Sonam Kapoor are dating. Also heard from the sets of I Hate Luv Storys was a funny story of how Sonam was embarrassed and refused to shoot intimate scenes when her father, Anil Kapoor, visited the sets.

In I Hate Luv Storys, the fashionable young actress plays a character similar to her off-screen persona. Samir Dattani plays a movie director, while Imran Khan is an assistant director and Sonam Kapoor plays a production designer. Both the men fall in love with Sonam Kapoor, and the fireworks begin. Nothing new as far as the storyline is concerned, but what might be different would be the treatment – an area where Bollywood is getting better all the time with the new crop of young directors.

Aisha, Anil Kapoor’s home production, is an adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel Emma. Sonam plays an uber chic high-society girl. Abhay Deol, Arunudoy Singh and popular veejay Cyrus Sahukar also star in the film, expected to release on August 6, 2010.

The actress says that Aisha is close to her heart because she plays Emma and had a wonderful time discovering who she is.

On the fact that she’s doing Anil Kapoor’s film, Sonam Kapoor said that her father is not making a film for her. He’s making the film because he believes in the script, she said, adding that she discusses movies and acting with her father, but the final decision is always hers.

Sources said Sonam Kapoor wants I Hate Luv Storys to release before Aisha, her home production as she’s keen not to have two releases in the same month.

The actress, known to be quite a fashionista, says she’s “a young, happy-go-lucky, well-read working girl, who likes to work hard and have fun meeting people.”

Apart from her new releases, Sonam Kapoor will also be working on Anees Bazmee’s romantic comedy Thank You with Akshay Kumar, Pankaj Kapoor’s Mausam with his son Shahid and another project for which details are not available. We’ll get them to you as soon as we are in the know.

Mausam, Pankaj Kapoor’s directorial debut, spotlights his son, Shahid Kapoor, with Sonam Kapoor. The film is scheduled to go on the floors in May. The film was to be shot in Kashmir, but the shooting was cancelled due to security issues. Mausam will now be shot in Edinburgh.

Shahid Kapoor, who plays an air force pilot in the film, has prioritized his father’s work and is not taking on any other roles till Mausam is wrapped up.

Sonam Kapoor will soon be off to Canada for a shooting stint for Thank You. The actress plays a character very similar to tennis player Sania Mirza in the romantic comedy, for which shooting starts in April 2010.

Director Anees Bazmee said Sonam plays a tennis champion in the film while Akshay Kumar plays a serial flirt who turns a new leaf when he meets Sonam. The movie is said to be a funny take on courtship.

Sonam Kapoor will be trained by a tennis coach for her role.

The actress is happy with the way her career has progressed till now. She says she’s been recognized for her acting skills and not as arm candy, which is what she wants.

Before venturing into acting, Sonam Kapoor, the granddaughter of film-maker Surinder Kapoor, worked as an assistant with Sanjay Leela Bhansali and assisted him on the making Black (2005). She then debuted opposite Ranbir Kapoor in Bhansali’s Saawariya (2007). The film did not do very well, but her performance was lauded by most critics.

Sonam Kapoor who usually wear Indian ensembles, mostly churidaar kurtas, will be seen in beachwear for the first time. Although, if you are expecting stringy bikinis, and lots of cleavage, you are in for a disappointment. The photos that were taken on a beach in the Maldives are rather modest to say the least.

The photos themselves take away from Sonam’s breezy naturalness. The sultry, pouty look is just not her and makes her look woebegone rather than sexy. In fact, one is tempted to ask, Why so serious?

She was considered ungainly and gauche compared to Deepika Padukone. What everyone forgot was that Deepika was a model and any model worth her salt has to be graceful and stylish.

While Deepika Padukone is extremely well put together, Sonam Kapoor is definitely lazy about her looks. But that is precisely what works for her; Sonam with her dazzling smile comes across as natural and bindaas, which is why a photoshoot like this does nothing for her.

Sonam Kapoor has very oldfashioned looks, pretty much like yesteryear heroines. A photoshoot that made use of her freespirit joie de vivre would have been infinitely better than forcing the typical sexy look on her. The look that makes Mallika Sherawat blindingly oomphy, Priyanka sultry, Deepika stylish, and Katrina hot, makes Sonam look like a school girl in her mama’s clothes.

Sonam Kapoor’s Delhi-6 will be released on February 20, 2009.

Delhi-6 is directed by Rakesh Omprakash Mehra and stars Sonam Kapoor with Abhishek Bachchan, Waheeda Rahman, Divya Dutta, Om Puri, and Atul Kulkarni.

The character of Jane Austen’s Emma caught the fancy of Sonam Kapoor, and she asked her father Anil Kapoor to produce it. Emma will be directed by Rajshree Ojha, the director of Chaurahen (2007) and Yatna (2005). Needless to say, Sonam Kapoor will play Emma. God knows, she has the height for it.

The rest of the cast and crew of the movie have not been finalized.

In the meantime, Sonam Kapoor is happily promoting her forthcoming movie, Delhi-6. You can see her on every TV channel and magazines, the latest being the cover of Verve.

Abhay Deol, who has finally got a hit with DevD – despite fantastic performances in Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!, Manorama Six Feet Under, Socha Na Tha, Ahista Ahista all of which tanked at the box office – is moving base to New York. According to reports, he is also signing up for a welding and metal work course at the Arts Students League of New York.

He has been quoted as saying, “Melting metal at 60,000 degrees fahrenheit is very therapeutic. It’s as cathartic as living out the anguish of DevD. I was planning to take this time off too explore new territories for some time. But in Mumbai I was caught up in the never-ending chain of doing movies and promoting them.”

Nice to see that this Deol boy, who has always been unafraid in his choice of movies, is not stereotypical when it comes to his life choices either. And, I am glad he is not one of those smug “thinking actors” who insist they are consumed by acting.

Apart from Emma, Abhay Deol also has a Dibankar Banerjee- director of Khosla Ka Ghosla, and writer-director of Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! – project in the pipeline.

Abhay Deol was last seen in DevD, a modern take on Sarat Chandra Chatterjee’s Devdas. DevD was written and directed by Anurag Kashyap, director of No Smoking and Black Friday. The movie also stars Mahi Gill who plays the role of Paro and Kalki Koechlin who plays Chandramukhi.

DevD has said to have raked in Rs 90 million in its opening weekend. As a longstanding fan of both Abhay Deol and Anurag Kashyap, I am for one, delighted with both DevD‘s success and their vindication.

While shooting Delhi-6, director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra auditioned hundreds of pigeons to find the one that could sit on Sonam Kapoor’s head in the Masakali song without flying off a hundred times. When Rakeysh Mehra couldn’t pin a single garden-variety pigeon down, he then proceeded to audition doves, at the suggestion of AR Rahman.

At Rakeysh Mehra’s request, 12 white doves were shortlisted. The chosen one was a white dove for Assam, for which Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra is said to have shelled out Rs 13000 a day. The dove, called Masakali, features in the chartbuster Masakali song, in Delhi-6, with Sonam Kapoor. And unlike Chicka, the pug, in the Vodafone ad, it does not have to work like a, well, dog. No running behind buses with a tie in the mouth, fetching stuff, following little boys and girls. A dove’s life is a lot better than a dog’s life, alright.

Masakali has also proved to be the star of  Delhi-6 so far. So much so, that actress Sonam Kapoor, whose name is Bittu in Delhi-6, is hailed by the name Masakali or Kabootari whereever she goes, much to her irritation, understandably.

Delhi-6 stars Abhishek Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Waheeda Rahman, Om Puri, Atul Kulkarni, Rishi Kapoor, Tanvi Azmi, and Divya Dutta. Delhi-6 is about an American-born Indian, Roshan (Abhishek Bachchan), who brings his grandmother (Waheeda Rahman) to India, where they live in old Delhi’s Chandni Chowk area, the place she loves best.

As he is drawn into the melee of colors, flavors, smells and quirky inter-relationships, that typifies the true character of Delhi, Roshan understands why his grandmother loves the city so much and in the process realizes his own identity. Spirited Bittu (Sonam Kapoor), on the other hand, can’t wait to escape from the conservative life she is forced to lead.

Delhi-6 is an intensely personal movie for Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. In his director’s note he has said, “For me it’s much more than a movie. I have dipped the pen in the ink of my childhood memories, and setting them against today’s contemporary India, have tried to weave a story.”

Delhi-6 will be released on February 20, 2009. The movie was supposed to release on February 13, 2006. Some reports says that the release date of Delhi-6 was postponed because AR Rahman had yet to complete the background score for Delhi-6.

Delhi-6 has been directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, and co-written by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Prasoon Joshi, and Kamlesh Pandey. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra has previously written and directed Aks (2001) starring Amitabh Bachchan, Manoj Bajpai, and Raveena Tandon.

He has also penned the script and directed the 2006 blockbuster hit Rang De Basanti starring Aamir Khan, Siddharth, Madhavan, Soha Ali Khan, Atul Kulkarni, and Kunal Kapoor.

Prasoon Joshi is the lyricist of Delhi-6 and has penned the famous Masakali song. He has written lyrics for movies like Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par, Fanaa, Black, Ghajini, and Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic.

Kamlesh Pandey has to his credit the story of Rang De Basanti. He has written the dialogues and script of movies like Aks, Zinda, Yuvraaj, and Thakshak.
