Indian summer at Cannes 2007

It isn’t just sugar-free entertainment at Cannes. India has cemented its presence at the Cannes festival, in 2007.

Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan, promoting his latest release Cheeni Kum joined eminent filmmakers like Mani Ratnam, Shankar, Prakashraj, Rituparno Ghosh, Raju Hirani and Ashutosh Gowarikar, at Cannes 2007. The presence of stalwarts kept the India Pavilion abuzz with a lot of networking and activity, the reports added. On June 21, 2007, Amitabh Bachchan became India's brand ambassador walking the Cannes croissette when his Cheeni Kum was premiered.

More films saw laurels being showered on many an Indian entry. While Shemaroo Entertainment saw its animation film Ghatothkach fetch several market enquiries, the other films succeeded in generating huge interest.

On May 17, India was the partner country at the opening night of the Cannes market party. The very next day over 1,000 guests thronged the India Focus party.

Seven Indian films were screened in the next two days. Besides, the Indian delegation being given the honour of walking the Red Carpet on May 19. A group of independent Indian filmmakers held a grand party at the Carlton beach projecting India’s presence at Cannes. India was also the spotlight country at the producers network organised by National Film Development Corporation Tuesday, said a report.

These apart, cementing India’s presence, more than 20 Indian showbiz companies have exhibited their projects and products at the India Pavilion. Organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) with the support of the I&B Ministry, the exhibition saw as many as 80 companies from India, including 40 independent filmmakers showcasing over 150 films.
