24 April, 2007

The Tourism Authority of Thailand is hoping to promote Thai films globally as also tourism within the country with a grand film festival featuring over 100 films from about 30 countries.

The fifth Bangkok International Film Festival (BKKIFF), to be held from July 19 to 29 July, 2007, was initially scheduled to be held in January.

Chattan Kunjara Na Ayudhya, Chief Officer of the BKKIFF, who will be overseeing the festival, more emphasis will be placed on the cultural and technical aspects of the festival.

The BKKIFF 2007 would have a strong Asian focus, with more movies and movie stars from the Asian region participating in it.

The jury members would be mostly from Asia.

The winning movies in the BKKIFF will be screened at the Cannes Film Festival, in France, in May 2007.

The festival will have three competition sections – International, ASEAN, and Short Films – and the winners will get the Golden Kinnaree Awards. The ASEAN category, which is unique to this festival, will have this year a package of 10 films from the newly developed cinema of countries like Malaysia and Indonesia.

Competition in the short film section is being held for the first time this year in the BKKIFF.

Many of the competition films will have Thai sub-titles. The World Cinema section, comprising 20 movies, will have films from Germany, France, Denmark and the United Kingdom. The Asian Cinema section has about 30 films from the region.

The other features of this year’s film festival include a possible package of Greek movies as well as rare films from French master Luis Bunuel.

A Lifetime Achievement Award will be given to Ray Harryhausen, master of special effects.

The BKKIFF would include the Bangkok Film Market, being organised by the Federation of National Film Association of Thailand, from July 23 to 25.

The Film Market is expected to boost demand for Asian cinema on the world festival circuit in general and for Thai films in particular.
