The 2008 annual
Oscars-night party has been
called off. Vanity Fair
magazine has decided to cancel
its post-ceremony
champagne-party in support of
the three-month long writers'
strike.
The invitation to
the Vanity Fair party, which usually
brings in the main winners and
Hollywood's best-known actors for a
post Oscar celebration, is one of the
most sought after invites. But as the
writers' strike continues, it is not
clear how many actors will come out on
February 24, 2008 for the Oscar Awards
ceremony.
Earlier in 2008, actors had
boycotted the
2008 Golden Globes event in
sympathy with the Writers
Guild of America, which is
fighting for better pay and
royalties on internet
broadcasts.It is being said
that the members of the writers' union
will sit together to hear details of a
tentative deal that could end the
dispute and lift the threat of
disruption to the Oscar ceremony on
February
24, 2008. However, Vanity Fair
has said that it would not be right to
plan a party if the strike continues.
The decision to put off the
party comes after much
deliberation. The magazine has
said that, in support of the
writers and everyone else
affected by this strike, it
was decided that this is not
the appropriate year to hold
the annual party.
