Automotive X-PRIZE partners Michigan Economic Development Corp; 51 vehicles to vie for $10-mn prize at Michigan International Speedway
Automotive X-PRIZE, the automobile competition intended to inspire a new generation of viable, super fuel-efficient vehicles that offer more consumer choices, will be partnering with the state of Michigan’s Economic Development Corporation and Michigan International Speedway for the multi-stage on-track challenges for 2010.
The Progressive Insurance sponsored event will aim at doing away with America’s addiction to oil and nip in the bid the effects of climate change. The competition winners will share a $10-million prize. This year will see as many as 51 super efficient cars from 41 teams participating in the Automotive X-Prize competition. All these teams have made it through a tough phase of design judging. The final event will get underway from April 26 onwards. The event will run till the end of August 2010.
The Auto X Prize competition, apart from the design judging, will incorporate a range of closed-door competition stages which would gauge aspects such as efficiency, safety and performance of each competition vehicle. After these ratings are over, the scene will shift to the Michigan International Speedway for the final lap.
On April 29, the Auto X Prize competition’s first public event – shakedown stage – will get underway. The Competition Opener & Welcome, as it is called, will be held at the Michigan State Capitol in Lansing. Further to the Automotive X-Prize opener event, in July, an open house event will be held at the Michigan International Speedway. The date of the final event which will decide on who will win the Auto X PRIZE will be in September, and the awards ceremony will be organised in Washington, DC. The announcement to this effect came at the Detroit Auto Show.
The shakedown stage of the Automotive X-Prize competition will see to it that all vehicles are clean-running. The Auto X PRIZE has been described as an event which moots developing real, production-capable cars that consumers will want to buy. This also means that science projects or concept cars are kept at bay. The vehicles in the fray will be put to ultimate tests, be it about braking speed, lane change ability, acceleration and recharging time.?
