The Chinese automotive market will get to see Porsche’s four-door Gran Turismo Panamera this April.
According to Porsche, the car will make its debut when it gets showcased at the Auto Shanghai 2009 in China which will be underway from April20-28. Sales will begin late summer after the unveiling happens at the show.
The Panamera, which would boast of a combination of a high-perfomance sports sedan and an MPV, is being positioned by the company as a rival to the BMW 7-series and Audi A8. The company also hopes to see the Panamera to match the market performance of its Cayenne SUV.
To be powered by V6 and V8 direct fuel injection engines that develop 300-500 bhp, the Panamera will come both in normally-aspirated and twin-turbo V8s engines. Transmissions are six-speed manual gearbox or the recently launched seven-speed double-clutch gearbox. Porsche is said to be incorporating a sports chrono package, which is expected to give the car an added sporting performance. The dynamic engine and gearshift characteristics are expected to boost the performance of the car.
Porsche, which will be lining up a Sports Plus mode for the car, is expected to see the air suspension lowering the car to improve aerodynamic efficiency and reduce the centre of gravity, enhancing driving safety and reducing fuel consumption, said a review report. Meanwhile, the normally-aspirated versions are rear-wheel drive while the top turbo model gets Porsche Traction Management with extra-lightweight, active all-wheel drive. This is an option on lesser versions.
The car would boast of a lightweight technology, made possible by the use of a mix of high-strength steel, lightweight alloys such as aluminium and magnesium and high-tech plastic materials to reduce weight. This has been effected in enhancing fuel economy and improve handling and ride, said the company
Even as the company gears up for a China launch, Porsche has increased its dealerships by 30 from a paltry three earlier.
