Porsche has been increasingly taking an interest in alternative powertrains – the latest news is that the company plans to produce three Boxster electric sportscars which will likely be powered by Tesla Motors’ internals.

Porsche is known for its great sports cars and the Cayenne SUV. But the company’s deep involvement in electric or hybrid development would come as a surprise to many.

The powerplants for the Porsche electric Boxster would likely be developed jointly with Tesla Motors.

Does this mean that we are soon going to see electric Boxsters? That does not seem to be the case. Porsche does have electric car plans. But the Boxster electric cars seem to be test-beds for the company’s experiments. The electric Boxster has not begun, but we expect to see spy photos of silent Boxsters being tested on the streets pretty soon.

Porsche already has a hybrid version of its Cayenne. Related: 2011 Porsche Cayenne hybrids and other variants launched in India.

Porsche has made it clear that they would like to produce plug-in hybrid 918 Spyder. We have already seen a concept Porsche 918 plug-in hybrid, which the company seems to be very proud of.

There is also a separate race-oriented Porsche 911 GT3 R hybrid which uses two 82 hp electric motors – one for each wheel – for the front axle and a separate 480 hp petrol engine for the rear.

Mr. Michael Macht, President and CEO of Porsche AG while commenting on the Electric projects said “We will definitely be offering an electric sports car in future. But such a concept only makes sense if it offers performance and a cruising range comparable to that of a sports car today.”

The current Cayenne Hybrid is Porsche’s first production car able to run under electric power alone. The Cayenne’s hybrid technology will also be featured in the 2011 Panamera S Hybrid, which will be ready for launch soon. The Panamera S hybrid would thus have a 46 hp electric motor working in tandem with a 329 hp petrol engine.

We will bring you photos of the electric Boxster as soon as they are leaked anywhere on the Net!
