Porsche has started testing its three all-electric Boxsters in Germany. The Porsche Boxster is powered by twin electric motors that produce a total output of 241 bhp, and a battery pack that produces 29 kWh of power.
Although Porsche has not released any acceleration and top speed figures, but the Boxster, we reckon, will easily be able to accelerate from 0–100 kmph in 5.3 seconds and achieve a top speed of 273.5 km/hr.
Porsche doesn’t have any firm plans to dish out the Boxster electric sportscar yet. But experts feel that the Boxster’s trials could give the company the know-how to develop electric or hybrid models in future.

Porsche’s interest in developing electric/hybrid cars has grown a lot more in recent years. The car maker already has a hybrid version of its popular SUV, Cayenne. Besides, there’s also a separate race-oriented Porsche 911 GT3 R hybrid, which uses two electric motors mounted on the front axle, each of them generating 82 hp, apart from a separate 480 hp petrol engine for the rear.
The Porsche 918 Spyder Concept, dubbed 918 RSR, was showcased at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show in January 2011. This car is powered by the same drivetrain as in the 911 GT3 R Hybrids. The 6.2-litre, V8 engine produces 563 hp and together with the two 75 kW electric motors at the front wheels, the total output is a whopping 767 hp!
We speculate that Porsche, Audi and Volkswagen could have some collaboration or platform sharing among each other, especially in electric/hybrid production cars.
Audi already has developed an all electric, e-tron concept, which the company showcased at the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2010. We are expecting the car maker to roll out the production version next year (2012).
The Audi e-Tron concept car has four electric motors powering it, one at each wheel. The power produced is comparable to 313 bhp, and max torque produced is a humungous 3,319 pound-feet or 4,500 Nm.
Maximum speed of the Audi e-Tron concept is 124 mph (miles per hour). The e-Tron concept can reach 0-62 mph in just 4.8 seconds, and the lithium-ion battery pack can take the car to a maximum range of 154 miles.
