The Nissan-Renault alliance will launch a few cars in Portugal. As per an agreement the companies inked with Portugal, new electric vehicles will be launched in that country by year 2011. The Nissan-Renault alliance have partnered with the Portuguese government in its bid to create a national network of charging stations.
The cars would also see a global launch a year later. The pact follows Nissan’s aggressive push on electric vehicles convincing deals cities and governments to go the green way to combat sky rocketing gas prices and worries about global warming. It is a known fact that Portugal is a global leader in promoting renewable energy, including wind and solar power.
Nissan and Renault who formed an alliance, had earlier signed deals with electric vehicles promoter Project Better Place, based at Palo Alto in California, to mass market electric vehicles in Israel and Denmark in year 2011. Nissan is also said to be in discussions with parking lot and railway companies to set up recharging stations. It has been found that shortage of charging stations has made electric cars impractical in the broader market.
The electric cars project from Nissan-Renault has significance considering the fact that most car manufacturers are focusing on fuel cells and hybrids. It is in this scenario that Nissan is going all out on electric vehicles, promising to sell them globally in 2012. Company brass feels that it has become a necessity that a speeding up is a must on the electric vehicles front.
Among the other electric car makers, the prominent are Subaru-maker Fuji Heavy Industries and Mitsubishi Motors Corp, who have plans to launchtheir electric vehicles in Japan by next year. Mitsubishi plans to sell its electric vehicle in Europe too by 2010. Other majors include Honda Motor Co, which is said to be leasing a fuel-cell vehicle in California, General Motors Corp who has the Chevrolet Volt and Ford Motor.
