Starting March 3, 2009, when the curtains go up for the 79th Geneva International Motor Show, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation will lift the wraps off its i MiEV Sport Air concept.

The concept’s global debut at the Geneva Show is expected to lure enthusiasts to its hub till the end of the show on March 15.  The concept is Mitsubishi Motors Corporation’s effort at exploring the possibilities for the future in the zero-emission vehicles space.

Enabling added driving pleasure and maintaining a balance between environmental and dynamic performance, the new concept aims at giving back all good things back to the earth. The tagline stresses this aspect and goes well with Mitsubishi Motors Corporation’s commitment towards nature.

The new i MiEV Sport Air concept is a powerful car which enables stable driving and handling. The in-floor lithium-ion battery gives the car a low center of gravity. The most significant feature is that the car boasts of zero on-road CO2 emissions.

It may be recalled that the MiEV was picked by the Green Car Journal as one of five nominees for its 2009 Green Car Vision award.  The car was picked as one of the nominees for its design and execution, termed to be best suited to meet the urban transportation needs of a rapidly changing world.

Powered by a state-of-the-art, 330-volt lithium-ion battery to power a 47 kW permanent-magnet motor, the MiEV comes with a compact, lightweight battery placed under the floor.  The small size of the battery helps in maximizing the four-passenger cabin. The winner of the prestigious award will be announced February 3 at the Washington Auto Show.

Mitsubishi, which had been testing the MiEV in Japan for the past two years, will be on show at Geneva. The iMiEV is said to have capabilities that return cost per kilometer to the tune of one third that of a comparable gasoline vehicle. It is being said that strong acceleration is possible in an iMiEV through a compact and highly efficient permanent magnet synchronous motor that generates high torque from a low speed.
