Italian automaker Ferrari is set to add another spectacular model to its line-up of Berlinetta mid-rear engined sports cars.
Ferrari has announced that it will reveal its new Ferrari 4499 cc V8 Ferrari 458 Italia at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this year in September 2009.
So far, few have seen the Italia 458 in the flesh. Guess most of us will have to wait for the inevitable flood of photos that will turn up during the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show when the official unveiling of the car would happen.
When it comes to Ferrari, style is the first thing that comes to mind and Ferrari, like always has lived up to its reputation of giving the world some fantastic car models. The Ferrari 458 Italia does not fail to impress in terms of both style and design.
The Ferrari 458 Italia is a replacement for Ferrari 430 that hit the roads in 2004.
The Ferrari 458 Italia rides high on power, capable of producing 570hp at 9000 rpm and a torque of 398 lb-ft at 6000rpm.
The car gets a new 4499 cc V8 which is Ferrari’s first direct injection engine to be mid-rear mounted.
Ferrari claims that the Italia 458 is capable of achieving a speed of 62 mph in 3.4 seconds. The car has a top speed of over 202mph. With these specs, the Ferrari 458 Italia would be the quickest road Ferrari so far.
Ferrari has kept the dry weight of the car to 1380kg with a power-to-weight ratio of 2.42 kg/CV. The company has said that “weight distribution is also optimal with 58 per cent over the rear axle.”
Complementing the speed is the ABS breaking system that allows the driver to stop the car from 62 mph in 107 ft. The standard carbon ceramic discs allow the driver to halt the car instantaneously.
The Ferrari 458 Italia features the seven-speed clutchless manual transmission that makes it tractable and comes with integrated versions of E-Diff and F-Trac thus providing the car with fantastic electro-dynamics.
The upgraded E-Diff and F1-Trac provide a 32 per cent increase in longitudinal acceleration. Along with the ABS, it has cut the 100-0 km/h braking distance to a just 32.5 metres.
The Ferrari 458 Italia has a low ground clearance and a typical Ferrari-like design. The aerodynamic and compact shape makes the car all the more attractive. The aerodynamic efficiency is confirmed by the fact that the car is capable of generating a downforce of 140 kg at 200km/h.
The teaser photos released by Ferrari show that the Ferrari 458 Italia has a compact, aerodynamic shape, with a single opening for the bold front grille.
The front of the 458 Italia has small aeroelastic winglets which generate downforce and, as speed rises, deform to reduce the section of the radiator inlets and cut drag, the company has said.
The car sports side air intakes between the hood and headlights to direct air to the coolant radiators and the new flat underbody.
The efficiency of the Ferrari 458 Italia in terms of fuel has also been improved as compared to the Ferrari 430. The fuel consumption of the car is 13.7 l/100 km.
The car incorporates direct injection and F1 technology to reduce internal friction, which results in an emission of 320g/km CO2 while returning 20.6mpg.
The tyres of the Ferrari 458 Italia too are a touch bigger that the Ferrari 430, with a wheel base of 2650mm. The front tyre measures 235/35 ZR20 8.5″ while the rear tyre measures 295/35 ZR20 10.5″.
The length, width and height or the car are 4527mm, 1937mm and 1213mm respectively.
The Ferrari 458 Italia would hit the roads in 2010 and currently there is no word on the cost of the car but one can expect the price to be a little higher than that of Ferrari 430.
