Affordable e-cars are what Detroit Electric currently has in mind. With the Malaysian government keen on having such alternate-fuel run vehicles on its roads,  the electric car brand is set to introduce electric car technology and unveil its business and manufacturing plans in that country. This in fact would be a comeback for the Detroit Electric. The company has lined up plans to progressively roll out affordable electric vehicles worldwide by the end of 2009. Malaysia is in fact is quite determined to bring in alternate fuel to its vehicles in its bid to fight rising fuel prices. With these ongoing efforts, Detroit Electric’s all electric cars are seen by the nation’s government as a practical way to tackle the on-going concerns.

The Malaysian government, incidentally, has also asked national car maker Proton to test and validate Detroit Electric’s technology and explore options for a collaboration in its bid to produce pure electric cars. Detroit Electric has begun working closely with Malaysia to provide a sustainable solution to the country’s fuel concerns.

We hear there is already an electric sedan prototype in Malaysia from detroit Electric which produced 5 second acceleration figures for a 10-60 mph run. Detroit Electric’s chief executive, Albert Lam said that the car would use lithium ion batteries. Detroit Electric’s chief scientist said that their electric motor is 4 to 12 times lighter than existing electric motors, and has a much higher power to weight ratio. At this point, one would be justified if skeptical about the claims, though. A single overnight charge of 7 to 8 hours would result in a maximum range of 200 miles, said the company. A practical challenge in Malaysia, though would be setting up charging stations – but if the car can be charged from a normal home power outlet, this problem can be eliminated.

Reportedly, an investment of $5 million into R&D over the past two-and-a-half years at its Dutch facility to develop this technology for electric vehicles. Detroit Electric has by now emerged with scaleable and durable electric drive systems solution ready to deliver affordable everyday electric cars, it is believed.

Detroit Electric has integrated its electric drive systems into Lotus Elise’s, two Proton passenger cars, Daihatsu-Cuore and VW Golf. These measures had been undertaken with an aim to use these electric drive systems to develop all-electric vehicles for volume production within the next 18 months.

It is expected that the Detroit comeback vehicle is right on track and a worldwide unveiling of its all-electric vehicles won’t take much time. By end of 2009, green technology might just follow Detroit technologies with Malaysia leading the way.
