Chrysler opts for hybrids

Most car makers are climbing on to the hybrid car wagon, as fuel prices show no sign of coming back down. Joining the group is Chrysler LLCChrysler has said that it would be launching its first hybrid vehicles this year. The company is expected to draw up strategies to expand its offerings into other vehicles too. The realization that major competitors have already begun putting hybrid engines in place has spurred Chrysler to seek that route.

Chrysler believes that the company has an opportunity to capitalize on with the hybrids. The company is also weighing options as to whether it could install hybrid engines inside its recently launched Dodge Journey SUV. It may also do  similar move and make a hybrid version of the Dodge Avenger midsize sedan.

Chrysler’s foray into the hybrid market is expected to occur this summer with the 2009 Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango Hemi Hybrid SUVs.. The new 5.7-liter Hemi hybrid is expected by the company to clock a 25% overall fuel economy improvement.

Meanwhile, an industry news source said that Chrysler has plans to sell the redesigned Dodge Ram with an optional hybrid beginning in 2010.The company sees a market need for hybrids and is all focused on this segment.
