1st October 2005:
Sony Computer Entertainment has withdrawn a Playstation
advertisement in Italy, after criticism that it made a mockery
of the passion of the Christ.
Sony's advertisement of its 10-year old Playstation game
console appeared in several Italian newspapers and magazines
yesterday, showing the picture of a smiling young man, wearing
what appears to be a crown of thorns. On close look, it
appears that the thorns are actually the insignia of the
Playstation console. The picture resembles images in Mel
Gibson's "Passion of the Christ". The headline to the
controversial advertisement reads: Dieci anni di passione” -
Ten Years of Passion.
The advertisement sparked protests in Italy, a Roman Catholic
nation. Italy's Cardinal Tonini described the ad as
"tasteless" and an "irreverent mockery". Several politicians
termed the ad as near-blasphemous.
Japanese multinational Sony has been selling its Playstation
game console for 10 years now.
In Bible, Jesus Christ was forced to wear a thorn of crowns by
Roman soldiers to humiliate and torture him, before he was
crucified. Devout Catholics feel that the depiction of a
grinning young man wearing a crown in the Playstation
advertisement is an insult to the son of God.
