Okay. British celebrity weekly OK now comes to India and will hit the stands in a couple of days. Only, it will be a monthly here. The publisher of the magazine is is VJM Media Pvt. Ltd, promoted by Vijay Mallya. Other magazines from the VJM Media house include Hi Glitz and Cine Glitz, both celebrity magazines.
In India, OK! will be priced at Rs 100 and will contain 116 pages. The magazine aims to expand all over India and not just the metros. Of course, the price would make that difficult.
The editor of the magazine is Sonali Kamat, an ex-Mid-Day columnist.
As of now, it seems that the magazine will have a blend of international and national celebrity news. The cover story of the first issue is an exclusive interview with Hollywood star Jennifer Aniston. The issue will also contain interviews with Bollywood stars such as John Abraham and Ayesha Takia. The Indian market is choc-a-bloc with celebrity magazines. But the USP of OK! could be its international coverage of celebritynews. So far, international celebrity features were carried by life style and women's magazines in India.
OK! was launched in America last year. British publisher Richard Desmond had claimed then that he was willing to pump in $100 million in six years to make OK! succesful. He claimed that OK! was the number one celebrity magazine when they were only two such magazines in Great Britain. He further added that OK! was still number one despite there being now nine such magazines. He felt that the tabloids were on their way out and that there were lots of young women readers who were looking for a more aspirational magazine.
In the UK itself, the magazine claims to have a circulation of over two million copies per week. Here in India, the expected circulation is around 55,000 per month.
In the initial months, OK! plans to give away designer Kurtas by various designers, starting with Tarun Tahiliani, to two subscribers every month. The magazine will also be providing an introductory discount of 40 per cent to offset the high price of the magazine.
