It is the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s response to the Indian Cricket League (ICL) launched by the ZEE Group last year. The format is Twenty20. The IPL has been approved by the International Cricket Council.
Eight teams will take part in the IPL. The teams were allotted to various corporate groups and conglomerates on the basis of an auction on January 24.
