In his quest to photograph the
mystical relationship between humans and animals, he has
undertaken 27 long trips to the distant corners of the
world spread over nine years. Usually accompanied by a
support team, supplies and equipment, he has even rented
oceangoing vessels for months on end.
A costly and complicated way to
produce images. A rare artist who goes out of his way
not to be noticed. He is not represented by any gallery,
he held no exhibitions for a decade and gave no
interviews. He was in sense a secret artist, although
shared by a small group of wealthy private collectors
who, through acquisitions and sheer enthusiasm, helped
to finance his work. If anyone is going to New York his
exhibition is on from June 6, 2005.

“The fact that the camera could
produce visual poems occurred to me only after becoming
acquainted with a pantheon of poets that I had
previously overlooked. I
t became apparent that good
poems could distil the chaos of experience into a
shimmering concentrate, liquor that was both lucid and
intoxicating… I learned by trial and many, many, errors.
The guiding principle was simple: photography, like
poetry had the power to transcend the liberal and
reshape the everyday. The best of it could cut to the
spiritual heart…
The images that speak to me
whisper deeper, more archetypal, insights into existence
like poems they are often the stuff of dreams; and like
dreams they are laden with meanings hard to articulate
in the harsh light of day…” To get in touch with the
