High-level meetings are on to explore the possibility of international flight services from Mangalore's Bajpe airport. If everything goes uninterrupted, then the first international flight from Bajpe airport will take off on May 21. From Bajpe airport, currently there are flights to Mumbai and Bangalore.

Efforts are in full swing to set up immigration and customs facilities at the Bajpe airport. Plans are on to set up a Police commissionerate in Mangalore and to upgrade the existing Bajpe police station. The airport recently completed work on upgrading its runway. All the flight operations have now been shifted to the new runway. A new airport terminal building is also in the works.

Air India had offered to start its flights from the airport 15-20 days after the airport is in good shape. Air India Express had also offered to start its Mangalore-Dubai flight service from this airport.

Air India Express is likely to use a Boeing 737-800 for operating these flights. on this service. The tentative schedule is that the flight will start its Dubai journey at 9.20pm and arrive back at Mangalore at 8.20pm.
