Jet Airways Mumbai-Shanghai-San Francisco flights from May 5

3 April, 2008:

Jet Airways Mumbai-San Francisco flights via Shanghai in China are expected to start from May 5, 2008. Jet Airways is awaiting final approvals before launching the flights. The airline has already started promotions for the Mumbai-San Francisco flights.

The daily flights to San Francisco from Jet Airways will be the first flight to San Francisco that any Indian airline has. The new launch also makes Jet the first airline to fly non-stop from Shanghai to San Francisco.

This is the fourth flight to North America that Jet Airways has launched this year. The other North American flights which Jet currently flies include Toronto, Newark and New York. All these were launched in the last one year. Jet Airways is likely to fly a Boeing 777 with 312 seats on the Mumbai-Shanghai-San Francisco flight route.

By flying over the Pacific, Jet Airways claimed, it is offering a route to India shorter by a couple of hours compared to flying over the Atlantic over Europe. Currently, passengers to India from San Francisco have to fly to Europe and fly on to India from London, Frankfurt or Brussels.

Jet Airways got permission to operate the Mumbai-Shanghai-San Francisco flight after a meeting of the civil aviation officials of India and China. Initially, China was reluctant to permit Jet to lift passengers from China and fly them to US. At the meeting, Great Wall Airlines of China also got clearance to fly to Mumbai.

Jet Airways will have a daily flight departing from San Francisco's SFO at 8:45 PM. It will stop at Shanghai in China before continuing on to Mumbai. The flight from Mumbai will arrive at SFO at 6:15 p.m. daily.

Tickets on the Jet Airways Mumbai-San Francisco flights will be available in Economy, Business and First Class categories. Tickets can be booked at the Jet Airways website or through travel agents.

Leg-room in Economy class is more -- and passengers in all three classes have access to the state-of-the-art Panasonic eX2 entertainment system, complete with movies, games and endless music choices - heard through Bose noise-canceling headphones.

All seats, including cheaper economy seats, will have seat-back entertainment systems with 200+ channels. Movies, music and games will available as part of in-fight entertainment. The upper class (First Class) will have large LCD screens, a dining table, seats which can stretch out to long beds, and a closet. Jet Airways claims that these flights will have some of the highest standards in luxury in the sky.

Jet Airways said that round-trip introductory ticket fares on its Mumbai-Shanghai-San Francisco route will be about $699, excluding taxes and fees.
