Dragonair hikes Shanghai-Hong Kong flight fares

BY OUR AVIATION CORRESPONDENT
May 31, 2006

Dragonair has increased the ticket fares for its Shanghai - Hongkong flight route because of the rising oil prices. Dragonair is increasing jet fuel surcharges to cope up with the oil prices. The new flight fares are expected to come into effect next month onwards. The prices will be kept high till the end of July.

The jet fuel surcharge will be increased to HK$109 (US$14.1), or 113 yuan per passenger per flight. The current surcharge is fixed at HK$93, or 94 yuan. This is the same for the flight between Hongkong and main Chinese cities.

Following the move by Dragonair to raise fares, Cathy Pacific Airways is also planning to increase its fares to adjust the rising oil prices. The Chinese airlines are planning to increase their fuel surcharges as the State Development and Reform Commission has increased the fuel prices.

China's three major airlines - China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines and Air China - are considering a proposal to increase the fuel surcharge to 50 yuan for domestic flights less than 800 kilometers. For flights longer than 800 kilometers, the proposal is to increase the surcharge to 100 yuan.

Though the proposal to hike the fuel surcharges have not yet been approved, analysts say the surcharge was set to go up with rising fuel prices, since most carriers suffered losses last year from the oil prices hike.
