GMG Airlines to add Mumbai, Chennai, Guwahati flights from Dhaka

20 February, 2008:

Bangladesh-based GMG Airlines is ready to expand in India. The expansion plan will include flights between Dhaka and Mumbai, Chennai and Guwahati. GMG airlines is reportedly planning to begin flying to Guwahati from May 2008 and services to Mumbai and Chennai will be operational by July and December 2008, respectively.

GMG Airlines, a part of the GMG Group, made its entry in the Indian market with its flight connecting Kolkata and Chittagong back in 2004. Apart from the expansion plans, the airline is looking at providing feeder services to airlines in India. The company said that it wants to provide feeder services to airlines from India considering most airlines in India are now focusing on international operations.

GMG Airlines will also operate daily flights on the Delhi-Dhaka route starting April 2008. It also plans to begin services to Jaipur too. The airline currently operates four flights a week on the Delhi-Dhaka route and three flights a week on the Chittagong-Kolkata route. It has deployed a 150-seater aircraft on the Delhi-Dhaka route.

GMG plans to operate the same kind of aircraft on the Mumbai and Chennai routes, while for the Guwahati-Dhaka route, it might choose to have a turboprop aircraft. The company, meanwhile, has plans to replace its current fleet with Boeing 737 by early 2009 and operate the aircraft on the Indian routes.

The airline, which clocks a load factor of 65 per cent on Indian routes, boasts of a 24 percent market share in the Kolkata aviation market. The code share agreement it has with Air India further boosts its market share to 40 percent in the region.
