SAS adds new flight to Copenhagen
from London City
BY OUR AVIATION CORRESPONDENT
February 4, 2006: Scandinavian
Airline System (SAS) is to introduce
an additional service to Copenhagen,
from London City Airport , increasing
the total number of return flights to
the Danish capital to three per day.
The new service would be launched on
March 26, 2007, and the carrier
intends to operate the route using a
76-seater Q400 aircraft.
The new flight will depart from London
City at 12.10 pm and arrive at
Copenhagen at 3 pm. The return flight
will leave Denmark at 10.30 am,
touching down in London at 11.40 am .
The duration of the flight would be
around two hours.
At present, the carrier operates two
daily services to Danish capital. The
services to Copenhagen depart from
London City at 9.20 am and 6.15 pm ,
while the return journeys commence at
7.45 am and 4.35 pm.
SAS also flies to the Danish capital
from London Heathrow airport, offering
a range of choices to passengers who
travel from the UK's capital city.
This also gives a choice to travellers
to set out their journey from one
airport, say Heathrow, and arrive at
another (like London City Airport ).
The Scandinavian airline had commenced
its first London-Copenhagen service in
October 2005. The carrier started the
services by flying two daily flights
from Monday to Friday, while weekend
services departing on Saturdays and
Sundays were also introduced.
Later, the carrier had launched a
London City to Stockholm route in
January last year.
SAS is also expanding its services out
of Copenhagen. With the coming summer
season, the airline intends to fly on
six other routes. Pristina will be
included as a new destination, while
Geneva (with three daily departures)
and six additional services to
Brussels are being planned.
According to SAS Denmark general
manager Susanne Larsen, "The
expansions are a positive
acknowledgement that we are good at
developing new destinations. Aberdeen,
London City , Luxemburg are all routes
that were initiated during the last
two years and they are now expanded".
At present, the airline operates two
services to Geneva and five to
Brussels.
The services to Scottish Aberdeen will
be increased with two daily
departures, compared with the earlier
one. The carrier also intends to
introduce larger planes with an
additional 50 per cent seats to
Luxemburg.
Sondre Stromfjord in Greenland is
another destination the carrier
intends to operate.
SAS in January this year became the
first carrier to offer travellers
complementary telephone calls via
Internet Protocol telephony. The
carrier had earlier provided access to
the Internet through personal
computers and was also the first
airline in the world to offer wireless
Internet connections in all of its
lounges.
SAS, along with its partner Sidewalk
Express, are now providing access to
high-speed Internet connections,
wide-screen displays and also the
opportunity to place telephone calls
free by using IP telephony via Skype.
