Spirit Airlines starts flights to Boston

May 24, 2006

Discount airline Spirit Airlines will start its flights to Logan International airport in Boston in mid-August. Spirit Airlines will operate daily flights to Detroit and Myrtle Beach.

"We're the largest low-fare airline to the Caribbean. You can envision that we're probably going to want to hook you up with that," said Barry Biffle, Chief marketing officer, Spirit Airlines. "We believe that Boston has a long-term opportunity for Florida and the Caribbean, but there are no definitive plans at this time," he said.

Spirit Airlines has services from its Fort Lauderdale hub and it operates all over the Caribbean.

For the two daily flights from Boston to Detroit, fares will start at $158 and also for the single daily flight to Myrtle Beach. The fares are exclusive of taxes and fees. The Spirit flights to Detroit will connect to flights to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Thus Spirit provides a one-stop service for those going to these cities from Boston.

Spirit Airlines is in talks with Massachusetts Port Authority for getting the terminal for its operation. Logan is run by the Port Authority. It is thought that Spirit will need only a single gate to operate from.

Spirit Airlines offers direct competition to Northwest Airlines, which has eight daily round trips to Detroit. US Airways is also operating to Myrtle Beach on weekends using small regional jets.
