BMIBaby to increase services to Spain

BY OUR AVIATION CORRESPONDENT

March 16, 2007: Low-cost carrier BmiBaby is increasing its services from Cardiff International Airport to Spain from March 25, 2007, by adding four weekly services to Murcia. The carrier is also increasing the number of flights on three of its existing routes from Cardiff for summer 2007.

BmiBaby will introduce a new four times weekly service to Murcia, a fast developing tourist destination along Spain's Costa Calida, and is targeting the tourist traffic to this location. The tickets are available on bmibaby.com for £29.99 one-way that includes taxes also.

According to the airline's marketing director David Hodge, "The introduction of a new service to Murcia will allow access to the Costa Calida and the fast developing La Manga strip from South Wales."

The flights are to set off four times a week from end of March, increasing the service to Welsh, eyeing on tourists for the summer season. It has also enhanced existing routes with more flights and improved journey times. The route to Palma has been upgraded to daily flights, along with weekly service to Jersey operating three times every week.

The carrier is also increasing the number of flights on three of its existing routes from Cardiff. BmiBaby will increase the services to Palma from four times a week to one per day, while that to Jersey would be increased to three times a week from the present once a week.

It will also add four flights per week to Faro, an increase from its existing four times a week. The fares for Palma and Faro would start at £29.99, while that for Jersey would begin at £24.99.

"We were witnessing an increase in demand for additional services to Palma, Faro and Jersey from Cardiff, and this was the reason for ramping up of services," Hodge said.

The airline is also retiming its two daily services to Belfast International Airport, with the flights now departing at 7 am to suit the business class traveller.

The low cost subsidiary of BMI British Midland, the company operates with its major bases at Manchester, Nottingham East Midlands and Birmingham airports. The carrier also offers flights from Cardiff airport to UK cities like Belfast, Edinburgh and Glasgow, apart from Mediterranean destinations like Alicante and Malaga.

In November 2006, BmiBaby axed all its flights from Durham Tees Valley airport to non-profitable routes. The carrier relocated itself to Birmingham from where it has launched a host of new routes for 2007.

The carrier has also announced launching of five daily services from Birmingham International Airport to Edinburgh and four daily flights to Glasgow International Airport, starting September 2007. After the launch of these services, the carrier's total service would increase to 46 flights per week.

It also facilitates allocated seating, online check in, and the option to purchase lounge access online with fares starting from £18.99 one way including taxes and charges.

Bmibaby started operations at Cardiff in October 2002 and operates three Boeing 737 aircraft flying to over 11 European destinations.
