British Airways (BA) is planning to launch three flights a week to Albanian capital Tirana, starting March 27, 2006. The service would be operated from London's Gatwick Airport on every Monday, Thursday and Saturday.
British Airways intends to use Boeing 737-400 planes on the route, with an estimated flying time of about three hours for a one-way journey. "Albania has enormous potential as a business and leisure destination, especially as an increasing number of Albanians are now based in the UK," BA's director of planning Robert Boyle said in a statement.
BA manager for Albania and Kosovo Albion Idrizi said, "I am sure that Tirana route will prove successful for British Airways. The opening of the route by British Airways means the start of a great co-operation between industry and state institutions from both countries".
British Airways expects 25,000 travellers to use the new London-Tirana route in the first year, and expects this to rise incrementally thereafter. International airlines like Austrian Airlines, Hungary's Malev, Greece's Olympic Airlines, Serbia-Montenegro's JATand Italy's Alitalia also operate services to Albania.
