First Airbus A380 superjumbo
delivered to Singapore Airlines
21 October, 2007:
The first of the mammoth Airbus
A380 superjumbos has been delivered to
Singapore Airlines.
According to reports, the delivery of
the first superjumbo marks the end of
a series of costly production delays
at Airbus. Singapore Airlines shared
the
limelight as the 240ft-long
double-decker aircraft was handed over
at a ceremony at Toulouse in southern
France. It is being said that, with a
much
quieter and more spacious aircraft,
the A380 has all in it to rewrite
travelers' experience. The aircraft is
also powered to reduce environmental
impact with a green tag attached to
it.
Meanwhile, Singapore Airlines has
lined up the first passenger flight
aboard its new aircraft from Singapore
to Sydney in the last ten days of
October 2007. It will also kick start
its the first A380 flight to Britain
in the spring of 2008, from Singapore
to London's Heathrow airport. However,
this will happen after it receives its
next two superjumbos.
The A380 can carry up to 853
passengers in an economy-class-only
configuration. Meanwhile, Singapore
Airlines unveiled the luxurious cabin
interior of its A380s, which have 471
seats divided into economy, business
class, and 12 special suites described
as a class beyond first.
The suites that cost 20-25 per cent
more than first class have 23
inches-wide leather chairs, a separate
full-size bed and a 23-inch LCD
screen. Couples will also be able to
lift the dividing panel between them
and create a double bed for a romantic
encounter in the skies.
