Greens take the tang out of Spice Girls Reunion tour

Even as tens of thousands of Spice Girls fans all over the world are looking forward to the much-publicised Spice Girls Reunion tour, environmentalists are not too happy.

Environmental activists say that the all-female pop group’s worldwide tour has the potential to poison the planet’s environment terribly. What makes them morally indignant is the fact that each member of the troupe will be given her own private jet for the multi-date show.

Reports say that Virgin airlines will provide Lear jets big enough to carry each member of the Spice Girls entourage, along with children and all their nannies.

The jumbo show, which will stop at cities like Las Vegas (the United States), Sydney (Australia), and Madrid (Spain), will harm the earth very much in the form of pollution, the greens warn.

Head of green energy switching and comparison website greenhelpline.com, Alex Lambie, has calculated that the Spice Girls tour will collectively generate as much as 9,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide through flights alone.

Alex Lambie was quoted as saying: “It’s everyone’s responsibility to limit the damage we’re doing to our planet. But clearly, some celebrities feel they don’t count. While we have events like Live Earth to raise awareness, many stars are still taking huge liberties such as using private jets.”

He added: “Even small steps can help us cut down our carbon footprints – like turning off lights, insulating our homes or switching to greener energy. Let’s just hope the Spice Girls have to rethink before they fly in the face of good advice.”

Following the reports of damage to environment, the initial excitement among fans over the Spice Girls’ reunion after a gap of 10 years has taken a beating. This general sentiment echoed when a former fan of Spice Girls said: “When you have concerts like Live Earth encouraging us all to be green, you get the Spice Girls pulling a stunt like this. Just who do they think they are?”
